Independence Day, or the Fourth of July, is one of the few all-American holidays celebrated in the US, and it is celebrated large-scale. New York celebrations always include a huge fireworks display sponsored by Macy’s in addition to scores of other events scattered throughout the city. As an international it can be quite daunting to decide what to do and how to join the celebrations. We’ve gathered a few tips and events here for you to consider when this holiday approaches.
What Do People Do On Independence Day?
The holiday is a celebration of the United States’ independence from Britain which was secured in July of 1776 with the official adoption of the Declaration of Independence. Since then, it has been observed every year with celebrations of varying degrees. Independence Day is a federal holiday, so unless you work retail, chances are you’ll have this day off work.The main celebrations of the day are fireworks, picnics, and barbecues. Towns throughout the country schedule official fireworks displays, often accompanied by parades or pop-up fairs with booths selling a variety of street food. Although in New York it is illegal for individuals to set off fireworks without a special permit from the FDNY, if you’re in the city you won’t need to worry because each year Macy’s hosts one of the largest displays in the country right on the Hudson River.

Taking place annually on Coney Island for almost a century the event has continued to grow and is even shown on ESPN2. Parks fill up throughout the city with picnic baskets, frisbees, friends and family. If you prefer to turn the holiday into a long weekend and want to get away from the hustle, bustle and tourists in NYC, consider a few days away in these nearby areas.The PoconosTo get completely away from the city and into nature, rent a car and head to the Pocono Mountain range in Pennsylvania. The mountains are scattered with tiny towns, each celebrating the 4th of July in its own way.The Jersey ShoreThere are plenty of beaches along the coast of New Jersey, so there are plenty of options for deciding where to spend a few days. Staying at a bed and breakfast in Cape May is a lovely escape for couples. Less than a three hour drive from midtown, the distance is worth it for the beautiful beaches and the Victorian architecture – great for a relaxing stroll. Kayaking on the marsh, craft beer tasting and art gallery shows make the perfect prelude to an evening of fireworks on the beach.If you have kids or want a more active getaway, just around the corner from Cape May is Wildwood beach, offering a weekend of fun with a patriotic pooch parade, boardwalk craft shows, an amusement park on the boardwalk, yoga on the beach and free concerts before the fireworks. Take advantage of the long weekend at the beach!PhiladelphiaThough it’s not getting away from city life, experiencing the 4th of July in America’s first capital city is a great way to feel patriotic. Every year the city puts on the largest free concert in the country at the famous Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. This year the musical guests will include The Roots and special guests including Miguel and Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. The Benjamin Franklin Parkway, lined with flags from every nation, will also be lined with various street vendors. Later, the famous fireworks display will take off above the Art Museum steps. Arrive early for a good spot, with a free concert offered, this event is always popular. Philadelphia is only a 2-3 hour bus ride or drive from NYC.
